The Great Confederation (Tim Brown)

Now Joey can you see us?
Was this what you had in mind?
Or was it just an April Fool,
back there in forty-nine?
This is not the milk and honey
that was promised to the poor,
In his great Confederation
we're worse off than before.

Though we didn't have much money,
just the forest and the sea,
We didn't have the 'Baby Bonus' or the 'GST';
We didn't have no quotas
or the need for subsidy,
But every man could work his land
and feed his family.

Interest rates and high inflation
didn't bother my Granddad,
A boat and two hard working hands
was everything he had;
I thank God for simple favours,
and Granddad's dead and gone,
He don't have to see our people
taking scraps from upalong.

No more fish left in our ocean,
and the forestry has died,
They have taken our resources
and are draining all our pride;
Perhaps we couldn't make it,
if we hadn't joined the fold,
But this great Confederation
put us deeper in the hole.

Does it matter to our children,
if we starve to death alone,
Or within Confederation,
if they don't throw us a bone?
Better if we died with honour
or just marched into the sea,
We could have saved our self respect
and died with dignity.

Now Joey can you see us?
Was this what you had in mind?
Or was it just an April Fool,
back there in forty-nine?
This is not the milk and honey
that was promised to the poor,
In his great Confederation
we're worse off than before.
In his great Confederation
we're worse off than before.
