I love to roam on the island I love,
The jags of its mountains, the salt air of its coves;
A history so proud yet a future so unsure,
Driving youth to mainland pastures, leaving lonely naked shores.
But I know that this isle can surely rise to heights once more,
To the days of teeming waters, honest work for young and old;
But until that time we must stand tall, our dreams true and sound,
With our hearts anchored to this holding ground,
Waiting for the times to turn around.
The fish are so much scarcer now so with so many nets to fill,
Old-timers waiting at the dock, softened hands and broken wills;
And yes, the oil fields will take their place and wealth will surely flow,
But all those yet born will wonder when did the old life go.
But I know that this isle can surely rise to heights once more,
To the days of teeming waters, honest work for young and old;
But until that time we must stand tall, our dreams true and sound,
With our hearts anchored to this holding ground,
Waiting for the times to turn around.
I love to roam on this island I love,
The jags of its mountains, the salt air of its coves;
They say things happen for the best, I pray this is true,
But with all the changes coming fast, I fear for the land I knew.
But I know that this isle can surely rise to heights once more,
To the days of teeming waters, honest work for young and old;
But until that time we must stand tall, our dreams true and sound,
With our hearts anchored to this holding ground,
Waiting for the times to turn around.
But until that time we must stand tall, our dreams true and sound,
With our hearts anchored to this holding ground,
Waiting for the times to turn around.
