In 1892 sailed the Albert and her crew,
Grenfell's life would never be the same;
With the bible in his hand he came to this land,
The fishers of the north need doctors, too.
Something touched his heart, he knew right from the start,
Kind and gentle folk with simple needs;
His mission began, he now would take his stand,
Everyone deserved a healing hand.

Grenfell the man, Grenfell the missionary,
Grenfell the answer to so many prayers;
Just as the snow will always blow across this frozen land,
His spirit touches every northern soul.
Grenfell the doctor of the north.

With blood, sweat and tears, and work through the years,
From Battle Harbour on the Labrador
To all ports of call, Strathcona served them all,
Smiling faces waiting on each shore.
Then came the morn by dog sled through the storm,
Adrift he knew his life was on the line;
Through the tears in his eyes, he called Moody, Watch and Spy,
Whose lives were given for mine.

Grenfell the man, Grenfell the missionary,
Grenfell the answer to so many prayers;
Just as the snow will always blow across this frozen land,
His spirit touches every northern soul.
Grenfell the doctor of the north.

Grenfell believed and helped others see,
Faith was shown through service to mankind;
His unselfish drive and his never-failing love,
He put his faith to action till the end.
His ashes lie still up Fox Farm Hill,
With Anne the lady waiting at his side;
Looking out to sea, his words for all to see,
"Life is a field of honour" a life he served with pride!

Grenfell the man, Grenfell the missionary,
Grenfell the answer to so many prayers;
Just as the snow will always blow across this frozen land,
His spirit touches every northern soul.
Grenfell the doctor of the north.

Grenfell the man, Grenfell the missionary,
Grenfell the answer to so many prayers;
Just as the snow will always blow across this frozen land,
His spirit touches every northern soul.
Grenfell the doctor of the north.
Just as the snow will always blow across this frozen land,
His spirit touches every northern soul.
Grenfell the doctor of the north.

Liner notes: Wilfred Grenfell was a famous doctor who served the people of northern Newfoundland and Labrador. Since first visiting the Grenfell property many years ago, Ed was struck by the greatness and humility of this man. Sir Wilfred Thomason Grenfell [1865-1940] indeed lives on.

From Newfoundland Heritage:
Strathcona - The Grenfell mission acquired the large medical vessel Strathcona in 1899, named for mission donor and first Baron Strathcona, Sir Donald Smith. The ship was one of the world's first to carry x-ray equipment, and also contained a dispensary, emergency cots, and space for a mission hall. The medical vessel allowed volunteers to treat patients at remote fishing stations and coastal communities in Labrador and northern Newfoundland.
