And now a brief passage from the pages of history:
That's how they showed their respect for Patrick Murphy,
That's how they showed their honour and their pride;
They said it was a sin and a shame and they winked at one another,
And everything in the wake house (if you'll excuse the expression) went....
The night Patrick Murphy passed away.
On the night that Paddy Murphy died is a night I'll never forget,
All the boys got roaring drunk and some ain't sober yet;
As long as the whiskey was passing 'round every one was feelin' gay,
John O'Leary came with the bagpipes some music for to play.
Mrs. Murphy sat in the corner pouring over her grief,
Says Kelly and his pal, "Let's open up some tea."
They sat right into the empty room with a bottle of whiskey stole,
And placed the bottle on the corpse to keep their liquor cold.
Well, that's how they showed their respect for Paddy Murphy,
That's how they showed their honour and their pride;
They said it was a sin and a shame and they winked at one another,
Everything in the wake house went the night Pat Murphy died.
At three o'clock in the morning some dusty blue-eyed scum,
Wrote upon the coffin lid: "Here lies a crumb."
They stopped the clock so Mrs. Murphy couldn't tell the time,
It was a quarter after three, they told her it was nine.
Well, the whole damn crew got merry, and they didn't care a rest
If Missus Murphy or the whole damn gang was dead;
Of all the things I ever saw, it made me shiver with fear,
When they took the earth right off the coff and placed it on the pier.
Well, that's how they showed their respect for Paddy Murphy,
That's how they showed their honour and their pride;
They said it was a sin and a shame and they winked at one another,
Everything in the wake house went the night Pat Murphy died.
