Ghosts Out In The Fog

Click Here for guitar tabs.

I've seen it all, the rise and fall, now the fishin' stocks are gone,
It's a different way of life, but we'll go on;
We faced the icy winds and snow out on the northern sea,
Where the cod stocks made a livin' once for me.

And I remember years ago when men, they made their daily catch,
With cod tongues from the heads of fish we'd snatch;
For a buck a pound we'd all go down close by the water's edge,
And wait for skulls to fall down from the ledge.

But if I stare out long enough over the mist upon the bay,
I can still see men in the morning sail away;
And I believe I see a vision in my dream upon this log,
Rise from the seas like ghosts out in the fog.

But time moved on, our lives did change, some friends we'll see no more,
As we boarded up the windows and the doors;
As we stare once more at an empty shore where capelin used to race,
And we'd leave for good, the tears rolled down our face.

But if I stare out long enough over the mist upon the bay,
I can still see men in the morning sail away;
And I believe I see a vision in my dream upon this log,
Rise from the seas like ghosts out in the fog.

And the years they drift behind us, the dreams we had are gone,
And we realize it's time now to move on;
Like an ember from the chimney of a woodstove, time it flies,
And it fades away like stars up in the sky.

And if I stare out long enough over the mist upon the bay,
I can still see men in the morning sail away;
And I believe I see a vision in my dream from on this log,
Rise from the seas like ghosts out in the fog.

But if I stare out long enough over the mist upon the bay,
I can still see men in the morning sail away;
And I believe I see a vision in my dream upon this log,
Rise from the seas like ghosts out in the fog.

From the Dictionary Of Newfoundland English:
Capelin - (caplin) a small, iridescent deep-water fish (Mallotus villosus) like a smelt which, followed by the cod, appears inshore during June and July to spawn along the beaches, and is netted for bait, for manuring the fields, or dried, salted, smoked, or frozen for eating.

Intro: [G] (strum pattern unique to the song)

I've seen it all, the rise and fall, now the fishin' stocks are gone,
It's a [C] different way of life, but we'll go [G] on;
We've faced the icy winds and cold, out on the northern sea,
Where the [C] cod stocks made a [D] livin' once for [G] me.

And I remember years ago, when men they made their daily catch,
The [C] cod tongues from the heads of fish [G] we'd snatch;
For a buck a pound we'd all go down close by the waters edge,
And we'd [C] wait for skulls to [D] fall down from the [G] ledge.

Chorus:
But if I stare out long enough over the mist upon the bay,
I can [C] still see men in the [F] morning [C] sail a- [G] way;
I believe I see a vision in my dream from on this log,
Rise [C] from the seas like [D] ghosts out in the [G] fog.

But time moves on our lives they've changed, some friends we'll see no more,
As we [C] boarded up the windows and the [G] doors;
And we stare once more at an empty shore where caplin use to race,
And we'd [C] leave for good, the [D] tears roll down our [G] face.

Chorus:
But if I stare out long enough over the mist upon the bay,
I can [C] still see men in the [F] morning [C] sail a- [G] way;
I believe I see a vision in my dream from on this log,
Rise [C] from the seas like [D] ghosts out in the [G] fog.

But the years they drift behind us, and the dreams we had are gone,
And we [C] realize it's time now to move [G] on;
Like an ember from the chimney of a wood stove, time it flies,
And it [C] fades away like [D] stars up in the [G] sky.

Chorus 2:
And if I stare out long enough over the mist upon the bay,
I can [C] still see men in the [F] morning [C] sail a- [G] way;
And I believe I see a vision in my dream from on this log,
Rise [C] from the seas like [D] ghosts out in the [G] fog.

Chorus:
But if I stare out long enough over the mist upon the bay,
I can [C] still see men in the [F] morning [C] sail a- [G] way;
I believe I see a vision in my dream from on this log,
Rise [C] from the seas like [D] ghosts out in the [G] fog.

Outro:
They rise [C] from the seas like [D] ghosts, out in the... [G]
