Like his daddy before him, his daddy before,
He was born to fish from the sea;
Up before dawn in the cold morning fog,
Always knowing what he wanted to be.
He left school when he was eleven,
To fish you don't need no degree;
At twenty he married his sweetheart,
And built a house overlooking the bay.
And he never asked no one for nothing,
All he wanted God put in the sea;
Up before dawn, kiss his woman, he's gone,
Out living a fisherman's dream.
Dreams have a way, yes, dreams have a way,
Of shining or fading away;
Big factory ships, they killed all the fish,
Somehow I don't think God meant it this way.
He sits staring out from his window,
He tries but he don't understand,
Why people who live in big mansions,
Can take his living and not give a damn.
And he never asked no one for nothing,
All he wanted God put in the sea;
Up before dawn, kiss his woman, he's gone,
Out living a fisherman's dream.
He looks at his wife and walks out in the night,
To where his boat rots away in the sand;
The tears from his cheeks hit the government cheque,
He angrily holds in his hand.
They find him early next morning,
Lying next to the waters he loved;
You don't put that man in a factory,
Or kill the dreams of a fisherman's son.
And he never asked no one for nothing,
All he wanted God put in the sea;
Up before dawn, kiss his woman, he's gone,
Out living a fisherman's dream.
