Great big sea hove in Long Beach,
Whack fal-o-ral taddle diddle i-doe,
Great big sea hove in Long Beach,
Granny Snooks she lost her speech,
To me right fol-diddle all day.

Great big sea hove in the harbour,
Whack fal-o-ral taddle diddle i-doe,
Great big sea hove in the harbour,
Hove right up to Keough's Parlour,
To me right fol-diddle all day.

Mother, dear, I wants a sack,
Whack fal-o-ral taddle diddle i-doe,
Mother, dear, I wants a sack,
With beads and buttons all down me back,
To me right fol-diddle all day.

Me boot is broke, me frock is tore,
Whack fal-o-ral taddle diddle i-doe,
Me boot is broke, me frock is tore,
But Granny Snooks I do adore,
To me right fol-diddle all day.

Fish is gone and the flour is high,
Whack fal-o-ral taddle diddle i-doe,
Fish is gone and the flour is high,
Granny Snooks she can't have I,
To me right fol-diddle all day.

She will have me in the fall,
Whack fal-o-ral taddle diddle i-doe,
If she don't I'll hoist me sail,
Hove right up to old Canaille.
To me right fol-diddle all day.

Great big sea hove in Long Beach,
Whack fal-o-ral taddle diddle i-doe,
Great big sea hove in Long Beach,
Granny Snooks she lost her speech,
To me right fol-diddle all day.

####.... Author unknown. Traditional Newfoundland song ....####
This variant arranged by Bob Hallett of Great Big Sea and recorded by Great Big Sea of St John's, NL (Great Big Sea, trk#3, 1993, NRA Productions, St John's, NL, distributed by Warner Music Canada, produced by Pat Jones and Great Big Sea, and recorded at Piper Stock Studios, Torbay, NL).

Note ¹: The small community of Long Beach, NL, is located east of the Trans-Canada Highway and north of the Isthmus of Avalon which connects the south-east part of Newfoundland with the Avalon Peninsula where 40 percent of the population lives, and the Provincial capital of St John's is located. According to a Table Of Known Coastal Flooding Events copyrighted by the Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador, an earthquake in Lisbon, Portugal, on November 1, 1755, probably resulted in the emptying of Bonavista Harbour. Ten minutes later water returned and overflowed parts of the community. The table notes that this song may have originated with that event.

Note ²: Canaille - old district name in Bonavista that survives from the beginning of the eighteenth century along with names such as Mockbeggar and Bayley's Cove.
