Come get your duds in order for we're going to leave tomorrow,
Heave away, me jollies, heave away.
Come get your duds in order for we're going to cross the water,
Heave away me jolly boys, we're all bound away.

Sometimes we're bound for Liverpool, sometimes we're bound for Spain,
Heave away, me jollies, heave away.
But now we're bound for St. John's town to watch the girls a-dancing,
Heave away me jolly boys, we're all bound away.

Now it's farewell, Maggie darling, for it's now I'm going to leave you,
Heave away, me jollies, heave away.
You promised me you'd marry me, but how you did deceive me,
Heave away me jolly boys, we're all bound away.

I wrote me love a letter and I signed it with a ring,
Heave away, me jollies, heave away.
I wrote me love a letter, I was on the Jenny Lind,
Heave away me jolly boys, we're all bound away.

Sometimes we're bound for Liverpool, sometimes we're bound for Spain,
Heave away, me jollies, heave away.
But now we're bound for St. John's town to watch the girls a-dancing,
Heave away me jolly boys, we're all bound away.

Come get your duds in order for we're going to leave tomorrow,
Heave away, me jollies, heave away.
Come get your duds in order for we're going to cross the water,
Heave away me jolly boys, we're all bound away.

####.... Author unknown. Original Newfoundland Song ....####

A variant was collected in 1979 from Pius Power, Sr. of Southeast Bight, NL, by Genevieve Lehr and Anita Best and published as #49 in Come And I Will Sing You: A Newfoundland Songbook, p.86, edited by Genevieve Lehr (University of Toronto Press ©1985/2003)

Genevieve Lehr noted that this is a song which was often used to establish a rhythm for hauling up the anchors aboard the fishing schooners. Many of these 'heave-up shanties' were old ballads or contemporary ones, and very often topical verses were made up on the spur of the moment and added to the song to make the song last as long as the task itself. Lehr also noted that in the third verse it is sometimes Maggie who does the deceiving.

A variant was arranged and recorded as Heave Away by The Fables (Tear The House Down, 1998, SOCAN)

A similar variant was also recorded by The Punters (Said She Couldn't Dance, 1998).
