THE LIGHTER SIDE:
ON THE LINE WITH JUDY HOLLIDAY

(No writing credit listed)
From "TV Program Week" January 29 - February 4, 1955

Hello, Judy Holliday? This is TV Program Week.

     Oh, hello…kachoo!...kachoo!...how are you?

We’re fine, thanks, but you don’t seem very well.

     Oh, it’s nothing…just my usual pre-TV cold.

     Your what cold?

Whenever I’m due to appear on TV, I catch a frightful cold days before. It’s inevitable.

     Have you had the doctor?

But of course. The psychiatrist just left.

     Psychiatrist? For a cold?

Sure. This isn’t an ordinary cold, the kind anybody can get. This is what you call psychosomatic. It’s means when you’re worried or something, you get sick. See?

Is that what the psychiatrist told you?

Yeah. He said I get these colds for the simple reason that I’m scared out of my …my…kachoo!...wits.

Scared of performing on TV? After all your experience on stage and in the movies?

If I live to be 100, I’ll still be petrified every time I have to act.

Have you ever thought of doing a regular TV situation comedy of your own?

I’ve thought of it — and it scares me to death. The one thing I don’t want to become is a weekly nuisance in anyone’s home. My big dread would be to hear people say, ‘There’s that blonde again.’

Not a chance, Judy. But many stars seem to think people can’t get enough of them.

Not me. I don’t even like being recognized n public.

     Does that happen very often?

Happily, no. I don’t usually go to places frequented by celebrities. My husband and I never visit night clubs, for instance. Oh, once in a while someone will recognize me at a supermarket or something. Even that embarrasses the daylights out of me.

How is it that more people don’t know you when they see you?

Well, I guess some of them visualize me as the small, doll-sized type. Actually I’m a pretty big girl. Then, too, I don’t use much make-up. I look a lot different from the dumb blondes I play.

We have it on good authority that you’re anything but dumb. There’s a rumor that you’re an intellectual.

Not intellectual enough to get rid of my butterflies. That’s why I could kill Steve Allen.

What does Steve have to do with it?

Well, he’s always so gosh-blamed relaxed. I’ve never seen a guy so completely free of nerves on camera. It makes me just that much more nervous.

Just the same, you seem pretty cool every time you work with Steve.

Well, of course, I don’t really hate him…I’m just green with envy at his unruffled manner. He’s a darling to work with, too, so maybe I won’t kill him, after all. Just give him back his old cold. Kachoo!

     Gesundheit.

Don’t bother…if you’re going to say ‘Gesundheit’ every time I sneeze, you won’t have time for anything else. Kachoo! But tell me, are psychosomatic colds just as catching as the ordinary, wet-feet, sitting-in-a-draft type?

     Don’t know really. Why?

I’d hate to have my son, Jonathan, catch one every time his poor old mother has to work on TV.

     How old is Jonathan?

Two last November. He’s quite a kid, if I do say so. He’s a kid like this: You ask him how he is and he says ‘I’m teething.’ How many children that are teething can tell you so?

Maybe he’s either talking very early or teething very late.

Kachoo! I just remembered…I’m pretty late myself. I’ve got to dash for a rehearsal.

Don’t let us detain you. Take care of that cold, Judy. Remember, it isn’t a real cold…it’s all in the mind.

Yeah. As Billie Dawn would say, I get it—it’s a head cold. Good…kachoo!...’bye!

     Good-bye, Judy. See you soon.
