SUMMARY FOR THE ATTORNEY GENERAL

This document starts off with a memorandum. Originally it was from D.M. Ladd to A.H. Belmont. Ladd asked Belmont to approve the summary he has put together from the contents of Judy Holliday's FBI file. That memo is encapsulated on page one. Belmont has added his recommendation on page 5 and is sending it back to Ladd. I have opted not to transcribe the entire 15-page summary Ladd compiled, because it just recycles the same information that can be found in the New York and Los Angeles reports.

Many portions of the document have been censored by the FBI, including an intriguing passage in the cover letter sent by J. Edgar Hoover to Attorney General Tom Clark. Hoover writes: "You are also advised that security investigations are being initiated of Judy Holliday's..." The end of that sentence and the next 6 sentences have been censored by FBI. That particular sentence could end several ways: husband? uncle? friend? lover? employer?

The lack of any real investigating by the FBI is the most shocking (and frightening) part of this document. Most of the personal information the FBI gathered on her came from a LIFE magazine article. I personally have yet to see any magazine article from that time period that DID NOT contain factual inaccuracies about her. One of the only people that the FBI interviewed in person couldn't even get the names right ("Mary" and "Judie").
