JUDY HOLLIDAY'S SWORN STATEMENT
Accusations have been made that I have been associated with causes, organizations or movements which are alleged to be subversive. I would like to set my record straight.
We are going through a period of tension and conflict, during which we must soberly and carefully analyze those forces which represent good Americanism as against those which do not.
I deplore Communism, the manner in which it operates, the way in which it perverts the truth, and the threat it now poses to our peaceful, orderly existence. I am equally opposed to any other "ism" which represents totalitarianism or any force which tries to infringe on freedoms and privileges.
I am against censorship. I am against persecution of minority races and religions. I am against curtailment of civil liberties. Because of these beliefs I have on occasion allied myself with others I believed to feel the same way. Some of these groups are now cited as subversive. If that is so, I can only say that I had no knowledge of that allegation at the time of any of my associations with them. I have always been responsive to a good cause and my activities were motivated only by idealism and good faith in the aims and principles of such groups as they were represented to me.
Below is listed a full explanation of my associations, participations and the reasons for them. In connection with my attached explanation, I would like to point out that I would not endorse any cause or agree to sponsor any organization if I knew it to be termed a Communist cause or a Communist organization by a responsible federal agency. Today, for example, I would not sponsor a peace conference which was described as a "sounding board of Communist propaganda" by the State Department. Neither would I sponsor an organization that has been described by J. Edgar Hoover, head of the F.B.I., as one working to further the interest of the Communist Party. Such statements emanating from official sources are designed I believe to make people aware that such organizations are not working in the best interest of the United States.
In certain cases my name was used without my permission or even my knowledge. If any Communist front organizations are using my name, they do so without my permission.
I will continue to accept my responsibilities as a citizen and to give my support to worthwhile causes designed to further and protect our American way of life.
It is my hope that in the future there will be no further confusion or misunderstanding about my beliefs. I would defend America and the democratic way of life anytime, anywhere and against any enemy. I am proud to be an American.
