THE SCHEIDT REQUEST

Typed on letterhead that reads "Office Memorandum - United States Government," this is request from SAC (Special Agent in Charge - New York Office) Edward Scheidt to release confidential information the FBI has gathered on Judy to what appears to be an ad agency handling the NBC account. Alan H. Belmont, the head of the Bureau's Domestic Intelligence Division, grants the request under the "Recommendation" section. Belmont sends D. Milton Ladd, the Assistant Director of the FBI, this memo to inform him of the decision.

Hand written in the lower lefthand corner are the words "Radio Industry" and "Judy Holliday." Judy had become a frequent and very popular guest on the weekly NBC radio program called The Big Show. She was featured on 4 broadcasts in an 11 week span. She would make another appearance 16 days after this memo, but seven months would pass before her 6th and final appearance. NBC dropped her from a scheduled 7th appearance after the contracts had already been signed. Plans for her own weekly NBC television series are also dropped around the time of this memo.

Also hand written below Belmont's recommendation is "...on a strictly confidential basis." The first word of that phrase is too light to read on my copy.

It also interesting to note that not a single scrap of paper had been added to her file since the Los Angeles Office closed their investigation - almost 7 months to the day before ths memo. What changed?...she won the Academy Award.
