THE SCHEIDT REQUEST

DATE: April 6, 1951

TO: MR. LADD
FROM: A.H. BELMONT

SUBJECT: JUDY HOLLIDAY

On April 6, 1951, SAC Scheidt called from New York to advise that [Name or names censored by the FBI.] connected with [Name or names censored by the FBI.] and [Name censored by the FBI.] which handles the NBC account, called him regarding Judy Holliday, the motion picture actress who recently won the Hollywood Oscar. In view of the allegations of Communist sympathy regarding Judy Holliday, NBC is somewhat concerned and [Name censored by the FBI.] advised it would be very helpful to him if the Bureau could advise him confidentially whether she is a member of the Communist Party for his confidential guidance.

Mr. Scheidt advised that he had checked the files of the New York Office which reflect that Judy Holliday has been connected with a number of Communist Party fronts, but he as no information to the effect that she is or was a member of the Communist Party. He suggested that [Name censored by the FBI.] be advised for his confidential information that Scheidt has no positive information to the effect that she is a member of the Communist Party, although she was connected with numerous Communist fronts, as no doubt [Name censored by the FBI.] has observed from the newspapers.

Our files reflect that investigation was conducted of Judy Holliday in the summer of 1950. This investigation disclosed her to have been an entertainer at and sponsor of various functions held under the auspices of several front organizations. This investigation did not reflect positive evidence of membership in the Communist Party on the part of Holliday. (100-368669)

RECOMMENDATION:
