THE BIERLY REPORT COVER LETTER
Addressed to Louis B. Nichols, this was a cover letter sent to the FBI along with a copy of Kenneth Bierly's report on Judy Holliday and her sworn statement about her loyalties. Nichols, at the time of this correspondence, was the Assistant Director of the FBI and the 3rd most powerful man in the Bureau behind J. Edgar Hoover and Clyde Tolson. He served as Hoover's liasion to the media and Congress.
It is typed on Columbia Pictures Corporation (New York Offices) letterhead. Unfortunately, the sender's name is too light to read on the copy I have. But it most likely was one of Columbia's legal staff. Several notations have been added to the document by the FBI. Most of the handwritten ones are illegible, but one typed notation stands out. Added by Nichols to the left of the sender's signature it says: "I told Belt it was difficult for us to assist him. LBN"
