THE ATTORNEY GENERAL MEMO
As part of their attempt to clear Judy Holliday's name, Columbia Pictures arranged a conversation between Judy and Attorney General Tom Clark. That conversation took place on either June 2nd or 3rd, 1951.
On June 4th, Louis (L.B.) Nichols sent this memo to Clyde Tolson alerting him to the fact that this conversation had taken place. Through his secretary, Clark asked Nichols for details about Holliday's file. When Nichols informed the secretary that Holliday was connected with several Communist-fronts, the secretary told him that wasn't enough information and that Clark wanted to see the file. Nichols tells Tolson that he has instructed D.M. Ladd to prepare a summary of the information instead of disclosing the full contents of the file.
The last paragraph of the memo mentions the Catholic War Veterans organization. This was the group that would later picket the opening of Judy's 1952 film The Marrying Kind. They carried signs that read: "Judy Holliday is the darling of The Daily Worker" and "While our boys are dying in Korea, Judy Holliday is defaming Congress." The Catholic War Veterans were also staunch supporters of Senator Joseph McCarthy.
