Our family came to America around 1700 from Scotland. I'm told "Saunders" is Scottish, a corruption of "saunters"...which derives from "sante terra", the French reference to Scottish crusaders on their way to the "holy land". Thus, sauntering was known as going on a crusade. John Muir (Scottish) referred to his travels throughout California's Sierra Madre mountains as sauntering, liking it to a crusade.
Hope this helps a little.
