This is a small picturesque
town 27 miles NW of London in Buckinghamshire County.
Here is where many of the people were persecuted for their beliefs.
They were called Heretics.

1ST GENERATION
(Note: *represents my Grandfathers)

*RICHARD SAUNDERS born circa 1560 birthplace unknown,
Married JOHANNA OSBORNE 7 Oct. 1582 in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, England.
She was born circa 1563 in the Buckinghamshire area.

Richard was a miller, at the time his will was written, proved Nov 1630.
He owned or operated one of the mills in town.
Probably the Upper Mill that was used to mill corn, flour, etc.
Richard was buried 6 May 1629, in the cemetery of St. Mary's Church in Amersham.

Joan was buried 27 January 1614/15 in Amersham.

Children:

ANN Baptised 16 Feb 1583/84.
Buried 20 Feb. 1583/84.

BRIDGET Baptised 14 May 1587. Buried 15 April 1588.

ELIZABETH Baptised 28 Jun 1590.
Died as a child.

*TOBIAS Baptised 30 May 1596.
Married ISABEL WILDE 27 May 1616.
She was born in the Buckinghamshire area circa 1598.
Tobias was buried 4 September 1642 possibly in the St. Mary's Cemetery. His will was written 12 July 1642 and proved 20 February 1642/43.

Isabel was still alive at that time.
She was the executrix of his will.

In his will Tobias called himself the Innholder of Amersham. Which means he could have owned one of the hotels in town, probably the Crown. He , also, owned the lease on the Upper Mill.

(Note: Sometimes children were not christened until they were 2 or 3. But, not always.)

The Crown Hotel

St. Mary's Church which dates back to at least 1140AD

2ND GENERATION

CHILDREN OF TOBIAS AND ISABEL:

ELIZABETH Baptised 26 Oct 1617 married THOMAS TODD 14 Aug 1634.
At the time of her Father's will she had three daughters.

Ann baptised 23 Jan 1619. At the time of her Father's will she was unmarried.

RICHARD was Baptised 4 Dec. 1623.

*TOBIAS was christened in 1629/30.
However, he probably was born circa 1620/27.
According to his Father's will he was to inherit 15 pounds when he was 22. He was under 22 years of age at that time.
He left England for America circa 1643 and would have used the inheritance for his ship's passage. So, either he was 21 at the time or he received it earlier.

THOMAS was christened circa 1631.

This is the Memorial to the Amersham Martyrs.

BURNED AT STAKE:
1414: William Turnour, Walter Younge, John Hazelwode
1506: William Tylsworth and his son William, Robert Cosin
1514: Thomas Chase died while being tortured
1518: Thomas Mann
1521: James Morden, Old John Scrivener, Robert Rave,
Joan Norman, Thomas Holmes and Thomas Barnard.

1532: Thomas Harding
Many others were prosecuted
and made to do penance.

Richard Sanderys(Saunders) of the Bury Farm in Amersham and his wife, Alice, were found guilty but later pardoned. (This could have been because he was one of the wealthiest men in town.)
There was a brass at the St. Mary's Church dated 1524 with their names on it.<

There were many others throughout England that were,
also, tortured.
One of them being:

Laurence Saunders burned in Coventry 1555

There is a memorial in Harrington to the
Saunders Family on the left side of the altar in a small chapel at the St. Peter St. Paul Church and
then an Alabaster monument to William Saunders dated 1588.
