![]() ~ Deaths ~ The first was Ralph E. Dary that was killed instantly, a retiree whose home in the 3300 block of North 85th Street was hit directly, he was found lying in the middle of the street. Dary had served in the Philippines in World War II and had won two Purple Hearts. There was thirty reported injuries all together for Wyandotte County Cheryl L. Roberts, 46, who was hospitalized ever since being injured in the F4 tornado, died of complications, on Sunday October 12, 2003.
She had been asleep when the tornado hit her home near 83rd Street and Cernech Road, and she was thrown from her home into a nearby creek.
Her son, Marine Lance Cpl. D. Michael Roberts, remembered her as a "giving person."
Any time stray dogs, cats or animals would need shelter, his mother would take them in. If they were injured, she would nurse them back to health, he said.
"She was a very giving, motherly person," he said. He added that if she had not been a tornado victim, "she would have been one of those people out there helping."
Cpl. Roberts said that at one point, his mother recovered enough to walk around and talk through a tracheotomy at the hospital. But she was fighting a total body infection, in addition to many injuries to her internal organs, he said.
Cheryl Roberts is the second Kansas City, Kan., resident to die from injuries in the tornado
