The Forgotten Few
There are a forgotten few
Filled with loneliness and despair
They're sure someone will come
To take them out somewhere
They look for them daily
They even pack their things
Hope fills their hearts
That this day will bring
Someone from home
Someone who cares
Someone who wants them
To be part of their day
Someone who sees them
For their true worth
Someone who knows
They have much to give
They might not say things
That make perfect sense
They might have a problem
Getting up those steps
Their social graces might lack
At the table they might spill
They might get a bit cranky
And need another pill
But their love is abundant
And freely they give
They're dedicated and true
For as long as they live
They might not remember
Who you are
But they know they love you
You've a place in their heart
So please don't forget
The elderly feel too
With a tear they reach out
For me and for you
I've seen their despair
Their loneliness and pain
They have family
They'll never see again
No one seems to love them
No one seems to care
They sign them into a home
And then leave them there
God says to love our enemy
And to love our neighbor too
Please don't forget
The forgotten few

I've worked in nursing homes for years and I now work in an assisted living facility for the elderly. What I said in this poem does go on and it's heartbreaking. There is such a thing as the forgotten few who watch daily for someone to come and just show them some love, and a little bit of kindness.
