"This shows a close-up of the war memorial on which are inscribed 169 names of those who were killed in the First World War 1914 - 1918. A further 11 added to depict action in subsequent conflicts.
Following the lines of a Mercat Cross the memorial is octagonal in shape each of the sides forming sunk panels in which are incorporated the dedication panel and four panels with the names of the dead inscribed in leaded lettering. Two of the remaining panels have subjects shown half real life size in bas-relief; one symbolising 'Duty and Defence' and the other 'The Glorious Dead' Over each diagonal corner of the chamber are projected turrets on the face of which are carved the Royal Coat of Arms, Baron Renfrew's Arms, Blythswood Arms and Renfrew County Arms. The Scottish Lion Rampant with a shield bearing the Royal Burgh Coat of Arms can be seen at the top of the octagonal column of the memorial.
The architect of the memorial was Mr. Hamilton Neil F.R.I.R.A. and the contractors were Messrs., Scott and Rae of Glasgow. The sculptor was Mr. James Young also of Glasgow."
