When you walked thru the front door of 64 High Street, you entered a long narrow hallway.    To your right was the bedroom, the bathroom then the parlor.    Opposite the parlor was The Kitchen    This was a large square room that we used for cooking, eating, sleeping and entertaining.    We would dry our washing on a pulley, which was three long wooden bars extending the length of the ceiling, lowered and raised with a rope.

The Sink was directly in front of you as you entered.

The Coal Bunker was to your left, and the coalman would deliver every week, and in my case it would be my uncles, Harry (he took over from my grandpa) and Dan Birrell.    The man you will see in this picture is my cousin Wm. Stewart McLachlan from 19 Knockhill Road.

The Grate to your right was our source for hot water, cooking, baking and our only source of heat.    Every week it was cleaned.    A coat of black lead polish would be applied with a cloth, then it was buffed and buffed with a soft brush until it gleamed!!!    Directly in front was our table & chairs, and on each side of the hearth a fireside chair.

The Recessed Bed ... Aahh, now that was behind the door ... and I'm remembering, getting all dressed up in my Granny Birrell's old fur cape and big fancy hat ... Then it was ... give me a drumroll ... open those curtains and let the show begin! ... *grin*
