| There has been a stronghold on this site near the town of Golspie since the decendants of a Fleming obtained lands here in 1211, subsequently adopting the name of the Norse south lands (Sutherland). Dunrobin was probably named after Robert (Robin), the 6th Earl of Sutherland and was first recorded in 1401. The architect Sir Charles Barry, whose most famous work is the Houses of Parliament, transformed the building into today's chateau-style structure in the mid 19th century. In 1915 several of its finest rooms were severely damaged by fire. |
