Have you ever been awaken by a shout? Especially when you fell asleep while waiting. It takes us by surprise because we did not aim to fall asleep while waiting. I figure that is what happen that night with the virgins as they awoke and prepared to meet the bridegroom.

Awake means to be attentive and to watch. Romans 13:11-12, "Do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed. The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light."

Satan tries to keep us in a state of fleshly slumber, drawing us away from our Lord. The Lord is saying "Awake get ready for My coming is near!" We want to be ready for Him when He arrives. We stay attentive and watchful as we stay in God's word and pray daily.

The word is alive and fills us with hope. As we read and study His word an excitement fills our souls. His word illuminates our very being as the Holy Spirit makes it come alive within us. If we neglect to read and pray we will become as the foolish virgins, who slumbered and slept without being fully prepared to meet the Bridegroom.

We have to keep oil in our lamps, not only to shine forth the glory of God in our lives, but also to be prepared to meet Him when He comes!
