What is it?
Microsoft Windows 98 sometimes will either change your icons or not display them at all.
This How-To Article explains how to fix this Support issue in Microsoft Windows 98.
How Do You Do It?
Repairing Windows Icons
1. Restart your computer in Safe Mode. (While your computer is starting up, hold the CTRL key down. Once a menu appears, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then press the Enter or Return key.)
2. You will need to make Hidden files visible to do this, so right-click the Start button, and choose Explore from the menu that appears. Click the View menu and select Folder options from the menu that appears. Click the View tab, and under Advanced Settings, select "Show All Files".
3. Click OK, and close Windows Explorer.
4. Double-click the My Computer icon from the Desktop.
5. Double-click the C:\ icon from the My Computer window. Double-click the "Windows" icon from the screen that appears.
6. Scroll down to find your "ShellIconCache" file.
7. Right-click the "ShellIconCache" file, and select "Delete" from the menu that appears.
8. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
Important Note: When you restart Windows, the ShellIconCache file will be created again automatically, so therefore, you can safely delete this file without worry.
9. Close the My Computer window.
10. Click the Start button, and choose Shut Down from the menu that appears.
11. Select the Restart option from the window, and click OK.
12. Windows will now restart, and your icons will be back to normal.
