IRT "EL" MOTOR AND TRAILER OPEN PLATFORM GATE CARS IN A VARIETY OF
BODY PANEL AND WINDOW STYLE CARBODY CLASSES COVERING YEARS 1878 THRU 1910.

of this car was built in 1878). This series of cars were a bit lower and
narrower body-type than standard IRT EL Gate Cars, and had 14 evenly-spaced
windows. These were the oldest of the ex-steam-loco hauled era cars to be
modified for Electric MU EL train service in 1900-01.

The IRT EL MUDC cars were former 1901 to 1910 era built Open-End
Platform "Gate" Cars, converted by the IRT Overhaul Shops in 1924,
to Multiple Unit Door Control with enclosed end platforms to create
vestibules, and outside-hung sliding car entry doors.

was a common tradition on the IRT EL until the mid 1950's, but not so on
steel subway trains!
