Sidedeco Designs

I experimented with this style of framing an image and will give details of how it's done in the simplest way I can. You don't have to follow it to a "T" - try your own idea on what you want to put on the left side. I've used flowers or dingbats to decorate it.

I have some examples listed at the bottom and these are all added to my Image/Card site so they are there for your pleasure and enjoyment to use on your emails, pages etc.

Now onto how I did these. Remember, I experimented so you can too and may come up with something entirely different. Use your imagination. I let mine run wild at times and never know what I'll come up with. :-) I just have fun. ~Lee~

TAKE NOTE: As we go along we sometimes find different ways of doing things and find ways much easier so I made a revised version (see below) but left this tute page as is
Step 1. I took my picture and sized it 250x335 (it was much bigger but wanted to add the side and borders so that it wasn't huge when finished.)Now go to Image Magick with it and depending on what your color background is on the picture (mine was white) go to Decorate 100x0 and white and border. (If your background is another color such as the one I did above, take it to a Color Grabber and find what you want that side border color to be and use that. Now that put 100 pixels to the left and 100 pixels to the right. We don't want it on the right so now go to Transform and use the number (in this case the pic was 250x335 and with the 100 added the size you put in the box would be: 450x335 -100+0 Now check CROP - put a check mark in the "reset geometry" below and Crop off that right side. Now your pic should be 350x335.

Step 2. Go to Decorate - border your color choice 10x10 Now we will make that vertical divider using LINE under Draw - 105,5 105,330 and same color choice in Stroke - Stroke Width of 10

Step 3. Now if you want to add a dingbat you would want to rotate it since most dingbats are shown in a horizontal position. For dingbat -- Transform - Rotate Right. With this particular one you see above I used the Font at I.M. - P C Ornaments and used the letters g and G (one is left and the other right) When you type that in, do one space between to leave a gap to fill in with another dingbat or leave it together and get the long dingbat touching. I used Point size of 70 North +0+20. For in between (flower) I used the 8 key and positioned it +0+25 North - Point size 55. I put the color in the Fill box. You can use a different stroke color if you want to get a different look.

Step 4. Transform and Rotate Left and you're done. Output - jpg - single file - scroll down and click on Truecolor - JPEG and Quality 35.

Here's the finished one.

Plum Ballerina

Here are some other examples I've done. Doing one with a border filled in with a background you would have to do the frame separately making sure you have the size of the picture and the side addition. For Example - if your image is 350x335 (the 100 is in this dimension) you put in a clear background using that 350x335 and then use Decorate and make your border 10x10 in white and draw your line in white and fill with a background. Now take your image and composite it to the right side using East +12+0 (or adjust to make sure it fits in right into that space.)Put in a color in the left side using the Paint method - Color Floodfill and color in box and click on the space at left. Now you can continue with the rest of the decorations.

On the Irish Lady (example below) I put the side background on separately (you would draw a line down using a stroke of 1 in a gray is okay and then fill in with white and do the fill in method with your background using Atop and Misc) and then I made the vignette oval separately and comped it on the right side first filling in the background with a color. Also, I didn't mention but with some of them, like the Autumn Vase, I put a border first of 2 around in a dark color for shading, then did the border in the golden color using whatever width you would like. To add it to the vertical line, I used the numbers like above using Line and put a line of 1 on each side to shade. I then went to Decorate again and used 5x5 in the box and clicked on Raise.
