Let's Make A Picture Hat

Making a picture hat is not all that difficult to do. It's making the details that take a little time. When I made my page of Fancy Hats I had a lot of fun doing it and everyone wanted to know "how" did I do that?

At the time I just went with the flow and whatever came to mind, I did. I was surprised to see the results myself. LOL

I won 3rd prize in a contest I entered for Easter sites and was tickled pink, to say the least. Well enough of my gibbering and let's get on with the directions.

This will be done using the Draw at Image Magick and you can change the dimensions smaller or larger. This hat is a smaller version than the ones I first made. Actually, to go with the hat boxes. I made the hatboxes using the larger size music box dimension of original music box made by Mrs.K (see my tutorial on my tute page - click on Lee's Varieties at bottom for page) and cutting part of the bottom off for the lid. I rotated the lid to give it a leaning affect against the box and then compositing hat, box and lid together. You will see examples if you go to my Hat webpage of how they look.

Step 1. Making a cap first you would use a clear gif of 200x200 - go to Draw - CIRCLE and numbers: 100,100 75,75 - Fill color White -- Stroke Color - none -- Stroke Width 1 -- Now to color in with a background go to Composite and put in the url of a background and use IN and checkmark MISC and then click on Composite and your circle is now colored. Output as a Gif and Single File and take it to Gifworks.

You will now Smartcrop to take the excess clear background off and next go to Effects and choose SPHERE. Now save the url to composite on the hat (Note: Jot the url down as they are short and much easier to control putting everything together. Note: if you don't want to use a background just put a color in FILL when you make the circle.

Step 2. Back to a clear gif of 200x200 (you can backspace to where you first put it in or just enter again). DRAW - CIRCLE use: 100,100 50,50 same -- white or use bg color. Now leave it as is (do not trim yet) and composite that SPHERE smack in the center. Surprised? Yeah, it's a cap and looks like a hat. LOL Now we need to give it some pizzazz.

Step 3. We need a band around that cap. Again, using DRAW and CIRCLE use: 100,100 75,75 FILL - None - Stroke - color of your choice -- Stroke Width 5
Another tip: If you are going to use a bow, take it to Color Grabber and match the color to use for the band.

Step 4. Decorate your hat. Put a flower to the left, bottom, top wherever you like. In the example above, I put the flower N.W. +33+35 -- The bow South +0+30

Trim and Output your hat using Gif -- Single File.

Another tip: If you would like to make your cap band and bow in a flower design using a background using the fill in method, you would make your band separately on a clear gif and then trimming it and output and composite to the hat.

Here's my page of Fancy Hats you can get some ideas to decorate your hat.
