CROPPING AN IMAGE

This is the easiest way to crop off part of images at Image Magick. Sure it's easy at Gifworks but it's nice to know how to accomplish cropping at Image Magick as sometimes you need to do a project without stopping, uploading and going to another tool.

It may sound very confusing until you really see what you are getting with the numbers.

Now what I've done is get an image as the one I'm using below and we want to take off the frame and then half of the picture below it. Sure if you know what the frame size is and you do know the picture size it's easy but that's certainly not with all images.

Use this picture and take it to Image Magick to practice with and it's only a couple of steps. Nothing could be faster and easier than that. I was doing it a more complicated way until someone suggested doing it this way and I couldn't believe myself how simple it is.

Step 1. Take your image to Image Magick and click on View. Now click the arrow and go to the bottom right corner inside of the frame and in this case we also want to take off part of the image below so place it right there at the water's edge inside the frame. Click and jot down the first 2 numbers you see at the bottom and in this case it should be 198,214, Jot it down so you don't forget. Now go up to Transform and in the box put down the size of your picture which is 220x356+198+214. Click on CHOP and (TAKE NOTE: check mark in Reset Geometry) then Transform and your side frame and the bottom should now be gone.

Step 2. Again click your arrow, this time go up to the top left corner inside the frame and click. The two numbers at the bottom should be 22,22. Jot it down. Now go up to Transform and in the box put in the new size of the image which will show as 198x214 plus the two new numbers so it should be: 198x214+22+22 and click on this time CROP. Click on transform and you are done.

Important - Do the right side (Chop) first and then the left side (Crop). Here's the image I used and the cropped one below it.

NOTE: Since making this tute I found out you don't have to use the size of the image in the box. You can just put in the numbers you get such as +198+214 and CHOP and then +22+22 and CROP and it works. A time saver. Thanks Linda for the great tip.
