As Recommended By Others After the 2000 Summer update, why did so many people have severe problems...and others did not? Why are some people have problems with the lastest client side update...and others are not? Back in May, 2000 during that significant and complex update, it was recommended by several knowledgable and trusted people that immediately upon receiving any update, we power off for at least two hours to allow our LBB's to "absorb" the changes. There's no way of telling if the people who did power off were the ones without later problems. Conversely, there's no way to tell if the people who did not power off were the ones who had the most problems. However, from that which was written in several newsgroups at the time, there was a strong indication that the people who did power off were the ones who were virtually problem free. In addition, it was recommended that upon logging on for the first time after receiving an update, all of the important settings be checked, i.e. call waiting, text size, ISP, Junk mail filter and the "opt-out" in the Privacy Statement setting. Whatever settings you had before the update would be the ones to check after the update. |

When an update is available to you...
• Delay taking the update until such time as you can be off-line for a while, such as going to work or grocery shopping, running errands, doing household chores, etc. • Immediately after taking the update, power off for at least 2 hours. Do not unplug your LBB because like your TV set, it is never completely off...and it needs that small amount of electricity to do what it needs to do. • When you power back on, check all the important settings. |

There is no guaranty this approach will eliminate all the problems that may result from an update. Some problems may exist that only a corrective update can fix, such as the 2.6.1 update did. However, using this procedure should greatly minimize any related problems you might otherwise encounter.
Footnote: My thanks to happyfriday, gopapa, may she rest in Heavenly Peace, and others for their very helpful posts in this regard that appeared in a former newsgroup at the time of the Summer 2000 update. Their posts obviously had an impact...and saved a lot of people a lot of grief. |
