The egg symbolized life and rebirth in celebrations B.C.; the bright colors symbolized spring. The Easter egg then became a symbol to early Christians of the Resurrection of Christ. Eggs were forbidden during Lent, and on Easter Sunday, were given as gifts for family, friends, and servants.
