Playing With Graph Paper

Assignment One

The best way to understand drawing is on paper. Go to this site and print off a page of graph paper. For printers' convenience, here's the url--- http://www.printfree.com/Office_forms/GraphPaper2.htm
Or----run to Wal-Mart and get a pad of graph paper with 1/4 inch squares.

Now, on your graph paper, count off 20 blocks across the top and draw that line. Now, count off 20 blocks down the sheet and draw a line. Same with the other two sides.

You should have a square drawn that is 20 blocks across and 20 blocks down. If each block equals 10, then 10 x 20 is 200. Your square is 200 x 200. This will be the same as a 200x200 blank on the screen.

Make a mark in the center of your square. Notice it is 10 blocks over and 10 blocks down. So the center would be 100 or the offset numbers would be +100+100 or 100 from the left and 100 from the top.

(Note: In the following directions, when I say over so many blocks and down so many blocks, that means "over from the side and down from the top".)

Now, count over 2 blocks and down 10 blocks and make a dot. That dot is +20+100.

Now, count over 10 blocks and down 2 blocks. That dot would be +100+20.

Now, count over 18 blocks and down 10 blocks. That dot would be +180+100.

Now, count over 10 blocks and down 18 blocks. That dot would be +100+180.

Now, connect the dots on your paper and you have a diamond shape.

Now, go to Image magick and make an any-colored blank 200x200.

On the next page, click draw at the top and choose line in the menu.

Your first offset numbers will be ---- +20+100 +100+20 (I hope these numbers are labeled on your paper.

Delete fill color and put a stroke color in. I used stroke width of 4.

The next offset numbers will be---- +100+20 +180+100 (See these numbers on your graph paper?)

Do the same for the other two sides.
+180+100 +100+180
+100+180 +20+100

Do you now have a square diamond shape? Just like on your graph paper, right? Every point on your graph paper will have offset numbers. So many over and so many down.

Now, with the same paper. 200x200. Let's make a circle.

Count the blocks to the left of your center point. Eight blocks would be 80.

Now, count the blocks from the center point upward to the dot. Eight blocks would be 80. Your numbers for a circle would be +100+100 +80+80 +0+360

Choose ellipse in the menu. Put the above numbers in the slot. Ellipse has three sets of numbers, the third set always being +0+360.

Now, let's make an oval on the same paper.

Count over to the left of the center point 9 blocks which would be 90. Count up from the center point and make it shorter, like 5 blocks or 50.

Now, your offset numbers would be +100+100 +90+50 +0+360.

Here's what mine looks like. Looked something like a face so I added a little to mine. LOL
