How to Crop
Using Gifworks and Image Magick
A Help Page by Mary

This cropping is a little different---we will be using Gifworks for the initial cropping and then Image Magick to cover up the unwanted pieces around the edges. There are probably tutorials written on this method. This is just my version.

Take this image to Gifworks. We will crop the pretty green and brown butterfly in the center.
For printers' convenience, the url is http://www.wtv-zone.com/Kitkat3l/Help_Pages_2/butterflies_sheet_keep.gif.

Click on edit and choose crop. Click on the image to activate the arrow. Move it to the top left of your butterfly and click. Do the same procedure for the bottom right. The nice thing about using Gifworks is having the cross-hairs to show you where you're cropping.

Here is the cropped image. There are four unwanted pieces to remove. Output the cropped image and go to Image Magick.

Go beneath the picture to the Paint Options and choose floodfill under Method, color under Paint Type and use slategray in the Fill Color. (Choose a color that's not in your image.) Click on the transparent part of your image.

To give you more room to work, we will add some space. Click on decorate at the top, put 50x50 in the number slot, put slategray in the color slot and choose border.

We will now do some pointing and clicking. The idea is to aim your arrow at the top left of the unwanted piece and click. Write down the first two numbers under the picture on the next page. Aim the arrow again at the bottom right of the unwanted piece and click. Again, write down the first two numbers under the picture.

For the top left unwanted piece, my numbers were 43 and 43. Also 67 and 63.

Click on draw at the top. Choose rectangle in the menu. Put your numbers in the slot like so. +43+43 +67+63
Put slategray in the fill color slot and click draw.

Follow this procedure for the other pieces that you want to remove. When I took off the writing, I had to do this procedure twice to get it all covered.

Go to the paint options and choose floodfill, matte and none for the color to matte out the slategray.

After you get this done, check to see that you got all of the pieces out of the image. I discovered a dot in the upper right and also a little portion of the writing. I backed up to my slategray image and used the point and click method and then clicked draw again. I used these numbers. +143+47 +155+55 and again I did +131+191 +143+203. Matte out the slategray, click transform at the top and trim your image.

Output as a gif and upload.
