Let's Make Scallops
A Help Page by Mary

This is a transcription of my notes in playing with bezier scallops. No part of this Help Page has been copied. If there is a word or phrase similar to another tutorial, that is purely coincidental. Now, on with the fun!!!

Here are the scallops and numbers that I will be explaining--

Bezier requires at least three sets of numbers. They are the beginning point, the widest point and the ending point.

All of these instructions will be done using "draw" at the top of Image Magick and "bezier" chosen from the drop-down menu. Fill color will be deleted and stroke color will be medium purple. Stroke width will be 1.

Let's take the first scallop. +0+0 +50+50 +100+0

The top line is 400 wide. Four scallops would mean each scallop would be 100 wide.

+0+0 means 0 pixels from the left and 0 pixels from the top.

+50+50 means 50 pixels from the left side. The next number is 50 pixels from the top and is the middle of the bezier scallop and is the height of the scallop. It will need to be adjusted to your preference. Try different numbers to see what your preference is .

+100+0 means 100 pixels from the left and 0 pixels from the top. This completes the first scallop.

Second scallop--- +100+0 +150+50 +200+0

+100+0 means 100 pixels from the left and 0 pixels from the top. +150+50 means 150 pixels from the left and 50 pixels from the top. 150 is the sum of the first scallop plus half of the second scallop. +50 is the height of the scallop. (This number will be the same in this design.) +200+0 means 200 pixels from the left and is the width of two scallops. This is the ending point of the second scallop.

Each scallop is made the same. Draw a line on a paper and divide it in fourths. Make four scallops. Each scallop is the sum of the previous scallops plus half of the one you're making.

The fourth scallop has been made using a fill color instead of a stroke color.

Now, let's do the outside scallops.

It's figured the same way. On this one we'll draw a rectangle to attach the scallop to. Take your blank to Image Magick, click on draw and choose rectangle.

The numbers will be----
+40+40 +360+360

Your line will now be 320 long so your scallops will be 80 wide. Each scallop will be the sum of the scallops made plus half of the scallop you're working on. And remember, the beginning point will be +40+40 because the rectangle is set over 40 pixels and is 40 pixels from the top.

Note: The minus 20 is not the number of pixels. It's the height of your curve and you will need to try different numbers.

The numbers for the corner scallop are--
+32+61 +0+0 +64+30

I hope this helps you understand how the scallop numbers are figured. There's a multitude of things that can be done with them. Paint them or fill them. It's good to make a template to keep on hand so you don't need to draw it again. You can resize the 400x400 blank and I would suggest using percentage so it won't be distorted.

Rather than flipping and flopping to do each side, this is an easy way. Make the top scallops and matte out the rest of the blank. Fill your scallops with a neutral color and you have a template to be used again and again. You can make a blank and composite the scallops using +0+0 and North. Composite again and rotate 90. Again and rotate 180. Again and rotate 270. Saves a lot of time.

Here are some blank templates.
