Tom Pelphrey's interview on Soap Talk was wonderful. Tom appears as unusually calm and poised. He has a ready smile, and a pleasant manner. He seems to be unaffected by the attention he is getting.
It was announced by the hosts, Lisa Rinna and Ty Treadway, that Tom has been nominated for a Soap Opera Digest Award in the Outstanding Newcomer category.
They commented that it is unusual for an actor to join a show and immediately "own" the character they are playing and that everyone in daytime is talking about him.
They asked him if Kim Zimmer (Reva) had given him any pointers when he started. He said she told him "when you work with me, wear a cup." Then, he said, Robert Newman chimed in, "if it's an intense day, wear two."
Clips were shown of scenes with Kim, and comment made about the chemistry between them. It was said that two other stars from some other show (not ATWT, I didn't recognize their names) had been interviewed recently and were raving about Guiding Light, and specifically about Tom.
He said "grandma" was on a mission, and that many viewers had been added to Guiding Light because of her calling people up all the time to tell them to tune in to see her grandson.
He told us that he had done some work at the historic Globe Theatre in London, appearing in Shakepeare's plays "King Richard the 3rd" and "Taming of the Shrew."
He has been acting since high school.
Mitch, who plays Lou on GL, is a boa constrictor, and originally was his brother's snake, but the brother moved out. When the GL people found out about Mitch they asked if he would join the cast.
After the interview concluded, Tom stood up, and appeared unsure whether he was to leave right then or what. It was very touching because he is so normal even with all this attention, and it would be so nice if all this attention didn't go to his head. After all, he is going to be a huge star someday.
