Van appeared neatly dressed in regular jeans and a v-neck shirt.

He told us that he got his part, Luke, on ATWT when he was a year out of college. He called his mother and told her he was going to be on "Days of Our Lives," and she called all the friends and relatives. He had to call everybody to tell them he was "stupid" and he said the wrong soap. He said he had never seen a soap before, was from a tiny town, and they didn't even have a tv set when he was a kid. Asked how he became an actor, he said he had no idea.

He said he was in a school play as a gargoyle and "there ya go."

He went through the Carnegie Mellon acting program. At the end of each year they take their seniors to showcases, along with Juilliard and other theater schools. They go to New York and Los Angeles and perform for agents, managers and casting directors. That is how he got noticed.

He went to Moscow for four months, which "seemed like a year." He was there from August to December. He said Moscow smells like diesel.

He went there because they have a great acting program, but he is learning as much or more doing the soap. He said if you want to "learn Spanish, go to Mexico.... learn acting, do a soap."

He said one day in Moscow he had a meltdown. He went to a mall to look for a jacket, and his credit card was declined, and he lost his keys and he couldn't speak Russian. The people around were trying to help him as he was "bawling like a little girl" right there in the mall.

He auditioned for "I Wanna Be a Soap Star" in its second season. The auditon was held on the set of "The View" and hundreds of people were auditioning. They were called in in groups of 5, and the first thing was to show them the "soap look." He was cut right there. Here is his demonstration of "the look."

But look where he is now!!

He was asked if it bothered him to find out after he was hired that Luke is homosexual. He was more surprised than bothered. He pointed out that you think triangles, and making out when you think of soaps, and this was unusual. He feels that he gets more attention because of it, and there has been a fantastic response.

He gets letters from homosexual kids and their parents, as well as the usual fan mail. One boy in Canada wrote to him that he would never have told his parents he was homosexual if not for this story.

He answered the question about intimacy as Luke and said if the other person would keep his cool and not "freak out" he would be fine with it.

He said it is "very important for the audience to see that these are just normal kids."
