Frame It First
I call this technique "Frame It First". It's achieved using the raise and sunk options found under Decorate at Image Magic. Use the image itself to create a terrific frame. Then use the original to composite. You can still add borders or frames if you wish; or simply leave it as is!
There are many variations you can try with this. I've provided two examples below. Use your imagination and discover what's possible. Most of all, have fun!

Example #1
Original
Sunk 75x75
Raise 50x50
Sunk 25x25
Here's what it looks like so far!
Enhance/Negate
Enhance/Gamma 1,.6,1
Composite/Difference (original)
Transform/Flop
I then added a 25x25+5+5
frame (#FFF9CB)
to get the final result.
Court Jester
Example #2

Sunk 80x80
Raise 60x60
