History of the Dolls with 3 Moods
The 20th Century Doll in 1946, made by the H & J Foulke, Inc - Trudy was "3-Dolls In-1".
There was "nothing else like it, at the time.
Advertisements went so far as to claim she was "the Most Amazing Doll Creation in a Decade". Trudy appeared in stores in 1946. All you had to do to change her face was turn a knob on top of her head. The faces not in view were hidden by a covered head. The features on the faces are smiley, sad and sleepy. Made of composition with molded and painted features, Trudy was one of the last mass produced composition dolls made for the mainstream market; plastic replaced just about all other manufacturing materials. For her time Trudy was remarkable and despite the somewhat unsettling existence of her three faces, an engaging doll. The value of these dolls today range $175.-$275.
In 1947 Trudy cutout paper dolls hit the market. Trudy was the "Queen of the Paper Doll World", she was carried in the Bloomingdale, Macys and Kresge stores.
Also, Hedda-Get-Bedda was a popular multi-faced doll. a member of the Whimsies produced by American Character in 1960-1961. This baby's head displayed happy sick and sleeping.
HISTORY of the 19th Century Multi-faced doll.
Trudy was not the first multiple-faced doll. In 1866, Dominico Checkeni obtained a patent for a four-faced doll. Dollmakers in France & Germany experimented with designs and produced mutiple-faced dolls on and off during the nineteenth century.
The Rest Of The 3-Dolls In-1 Story
Have You ever said -WOW! I Had That Doll.
"I Had That Doll!"! In 1946, I received a gift, my Trudy Doll, with her blue and white bunting. As a child, she was my constant, . Always there, to hug . When I was little, she went everywhere with me; as a teen-ager she sat on the bed and patiently waited for my return; as a young adult she took a long nap, wrapped in a tissued box. When I became a mom, she played with my children. When they became young adults, she
went back for a long nap. When the grandchildren found out about her, they wanted her to wake up and play with them. However, she was just too tired, to play. I guess we just plum wore her out.
I thought how wonderful it would be at the turn of the century to offer a new version, a Country Cousin, of the 1946 Trudy- 3-Dolls In-1. The opportunity for others to love and enjoy, by adding a cousin to this 3-Dolls In-1 to your family history.
You still turn the head to change expressions. New-press her heart to hear a little tune.
Handcrafted one doll at a time- one-of-a kind.
