Cupid

the Facts
In ancent Greece, he was known as "Eros"... the young son of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. To the Romans, he was "Cupid" and his mother was Venus. To Connie Francis (singer), he was "Stupid Cupid". He's the little guy that runs around half naked with a bow and arrow and when he takes aim, look out!
The story has it that Venus was jealous of the beauty of Psyche and told Cupid to punish the mortal but, alas, Cupid fell in love with her and they got married... wonder if that is where the expresson "Oh god" screamed repeatedly comes from (humor hahaha)... the major drawback to this union was that as a mortal, Psyche was forbidden to look at him. Gossip has it that she was perfectly content with all this until her sisters convinced her to sneak a peek at him. Cupid punished her by leaving and he took everything with him... yup, castle and gardens vanished too and Psyche found herself alone. I have no clue what happened to her sisters either. Anyhow, Psyche wandered about in an attempt to find Cupid. She happened upon the temple of Venus... and the goddess of love still wished to destroy her so she gave her a series of tasks to do... each was more dangerous and harder to accomplish then the one before.
For her final task, Psyche was sent to the underworld...

Scenario:
Venus: "Here's a little box."
Psyche: "What am I to put in this?"
Venus: "A little of Proserpine's beauty."
Psyche: "Isn't she the wife of Pluto?"
Venus: "Yes, and you're point is?"
Psyche: "Piece of cake."
Venus" "By the way, don't open the box after."

So off trots Psyche carrying the little box, a manual "Tips on Avoiding Dangers in the Realm of the Dead", a map, and a light lunch. But after completion of this, her final task, she has a run in with Temptation... oho... "DON'T OPEN THE BOX!"... instead of Proserpine's beauty, she found a deadly slumber.
Cupid found her lifeless body on the ground and gathered the deadly sleep and put it back in the box (first time a man has EVER put anything away)... Cupid forgave Psyche for looking at him and Venus got over her jealousy and the rest of the gods, so moved by Psyche's love for Cupid, forgave her also.

To this day, Cupid and his little arrows stand as a symbol of love and, thus, we have the two hearts pierced by an arrow.
