"Thoughts In The Dark Of Night On Life"

The other day a very close friend died
On a bright clear, crisp, spring morning
Someone on whom I quite often relied
Especially when alone an it was storming

Secure within my warm an familiar abode
Reality had awakened me with a cold chill
The shock and pain so suddenly bestowed
That my friend shall now be forever still

Awareness that there just isn't any more
No more special moments for us together
To celebrate, an no more hugs at my door
No more quick lunches or a lazy dinner

No more little secrets to share with me
And no more giggles, smiles or laughter
No more sunbathing trips down to the sea
Nor, "I'll be with you in a minute Dear"

No more phone calls just for a little talk
And no chance for me to ever again say
On an evening stroll down our sidewalk
Things I thought about almost every day

That I have always meant to say to you
But will sadly now remain forever unsaid
Those feelings shared with so very few
But it's over, done, gone, fini, you're dead

The love will probably linger on for awhile
An will no doubt wither without any return
To be placed in a cherished memory file
I can open when it's your presence I yearn

Sometimes, those we care about the most
Will suddenly die or maybe just disappear
Their memory returns like a friendly ghost
An as we age it happens too often I fear

But we never stopped to think of revealing
The joy found in this friendship as it grew
A Good-bye, or express personal feeling
Maybe from the heart, just an "I love you"

So my friend if you still have time to allow
It's a good idea to repair those broken ties
Inventory friends, family, loved ones now
An exploring inner emotions may be wise

Let each know you care an love them all
Cuz our lives happen to be so very fragile
By accident or sickness you can't forestall
Can be quickly snuffed out against our will

So try to live it, love it, and enjoy it well
Let others share and celebrate it with you
Life is quite important as far as I can tell
An I hear we only get one chance at it too
